Sumario: | The embassy speech of Charles Vaux to the Tupinambas Indians of Maranhão, on occasion of the arrival of the French expedition, July 27th, 1612, as reported by Claude d'Abbeville, in his Histoire de la Mission des Pères Capucins, is a mine of information for the historian curious about the last French attempt to settle a colony in Brazil. It is nevertheless on examination of its shape and of its structure that this text reveals all its wealth: the methods of literary analysis make the ideology behind the text and the representations it engenders more explicit. |
