Problems, which have occurred as a result of rapidly expanding cities without considering the basic needs and protection-use balances, have given rise to decrease in life quality and distinctive increase in urban open and green areas requirements. However, there are only very limited activities/interventions for adaptation to the natural systems and characteristics during the formation of most of today’s cities. Therefore environmental problems and disasters are faced. The major issue adopted in this paper is Ian McHarg’s approach presented in his masterpiece Design with Nature first published in 1969, which highlights that the synergy rising from the planning and design processes in accordance with the nature will help prevent environmental and social problems. It is remarked that with tis approach McHarg also formed the intellectual basis of geodesgin theory, which later combined with GIS and represented to the World by Jack Dangermond. Besides, it has been emphasized that the application fields of geodesign today increase rapidly, and it is adopted not only for urban planning works, but also many other fields such as conservation of wildlife, global warming, coastal and catchment area planning, sustainable urban and rural planning, transportation and traffic applications, flood and disaster management.Mehmet DEĞERLİYURTSaye Nihan ÇABUKFırat Universityarticlegeodesignian mcharggeographical information systemsdesign with natureplanningSocial SciencesHSocial sciences (General)H1-99DEENFRTRJournal of Academic Social Science Studies , Vol 8, Iss 39, Pp 293-306 (2019)
