Sumario:This article focuses on how a group of twelve children, between 7 and 10 years of age, from a rural school in Pachacamac (Lima, Perú), respond to reading picture books: "Gorilón" (fear), and "Fernando Furioso" (fury). The aim is to analyse the oral responses, drawings and comments made by the children in response to the narration of these picture books, identifying the types of responses (in line with Kiefer's categories), and how the children interpret and learn from the activity. The data were obtained by recording the reading sessions; the interviews; the drawings; the anecdotal records. The findings indicate that picture books generated heuristic category responses (26/36) over the other categories. The main conclusions are that the narrative, textual and graphic resources used mobilised observation skills that allowed clues to be perceived, inferences drawn, experiences activated and knowledge evoked, leading to the activation of interpretation and personal projection mechanisms. The children were seen to talk about the feelings conjured up when reading, expressed in different languages, their value judgements and their experiences.
