Their purpose was to check the religious and moral life of the inhabitants of the New World, excluding the native peoples. Due to their special legal status, missionaries were in control of their behaviour. The main task of the Inquisition was related to religious matters, the safeguard of Christian orthodoxy, including marriage and sexuality. Both in Spain and Spanish America, not legally accepted sexual practices were harshly repressed, specially male homosexuality. In the territory of Tierra Firme, now Venezuela, dependent during the colonial period of the Tribunal of the Inquisition from Cartagena, the prosecution of this unlawful sexual practices had the colaboration of church and civil authorities.
