School principals of 9 schools in the center municipalities of the city of Antalya have been contacted by using semi structured personal interview forms. For the analysis of the collected data, content analysis has been used. NVivo 9.2 package program was used to encode and categorize the data. The results of the research show that the principals’ conceive their authorities as insufficient and in some cases, in order not to witness resistance, instead of using their authority they use their relations. All of the 9 principals stated that, if they have the power of selecting personnel, creating funds and the freedom of using their funds for the school, they would make the school a more efficient place. In some instances, they experienced difficulties in using their authorities and they were intruded by the intervention of their superiors, politicians and unionists. It has been found out that delegation of authority is perceived as a necessary practice as it positively affects teamwork and motivates people. In the delegation of authority, fairness, merit, specialization and written announcement appear to be the main principles. It has been observed that the most important factor that makes the transfer of authority difficult is the distrust of subordinates, and school principals trust the vice principals they recommend more among their subordinates to whom they will delegate authority. The major factors that make the delegation of authority difficult are found to be; the distrust to the subordinates, the regulations not being clear and the will of holding power.Ebru Burcu ÇİMİLİ GÖKKemal KAYIKÇISerdar ÖZÇETİNRamazan GÖKFırat Universityarticleauthoritydelegation of authorityseize of authoritycase studycontent analysisSocial SciencesHSocial sciences (General)H1-99DEENFRTRJournal of Academic Social Science Studies , Vol 14, Iss 84, Pp 37-55 (2021)
