Sumario:Despite legal constraints, the constant arrival and settlement of foreign immigrants in the River Plate during the old regime make us inquire about the circumstances and the terms under which they managed to integrate themselves into the local community. It is our purpose, therefore, to explore the perceptions and practices of the natives of the “rioplatenses” towards foreigners by analyzing the dossier started in the Juzgado de Bienes de Difuntos in relation to the last will and testament of the Genoese immigrant, Juan Guillén. The testimonies included in this dossier are compelling documentary evidence that faced with lax institutional control mechanisms with regards to the presence and settlement of foreigners, in everyday practices and in the actors’ perceptions the condition of being a foreigner appears as vague and lacking legal, economic or social content.
