Sumario:This research aims at analysing of postgraduate dissertations on viola written in Turkish Universities based on the criteria determined from the structural and qualitative perspectives. Due to the fact that the current study aims to describe the post-graduate theses written about viola, the research is designed in the survey model. The research population was composed of postgraduate dissertations on viola that had been written in Turkish Universities while the research sample was composed of the theses reached by the researcher in the theses database available in the Turkish Board of Higher Education. Thus, 38 dissertations written since 1994 on viola, that were reached by the researcher, were analysed in this research. For the purposes of data collection, the relevant field literature was reviewed and expert opinions were obtained, and thus “the form for thesis analysis” was developed. The information concerning each thesis was recorded on this form. The technique of document analysis was used for the evaluation of the theses. Quantitative distribution by years, fields of study, and the classification of the study models were specified as the basic dimensions in the analysis. Content analysis – one of the categorical data analysis techniques – was used in the analysis of the data. Consequently, it was found that the highest number of post-graduate theses was prepared in Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University, 23 of them were written by male students whereas 15 were written by female students, and that the survey model was employed in all of the theses. In the light of the findings of the evaluation of those theses from the structural and qalitative perspectives, recommendations were made as to the need to increase the number of theses to contribute to the field of viola and as to conducting mixed (empirical and survey) model research studies beside the descriptive model in this field.
