Sumario:Although there are many studies relating safety climate and safety behaviour in last decade, few safety climate measures have been developed and assessed in Turkish industry. The research presented in this article aimed to analyze safety climate and safety behaviour in two marble factories in Diyarbakır, Turkey. One of the factories was receiving service from joint health and safety units and the other employed job safety and health specialist. Factor analysis applied to surveys face to face revealed three safety climate dimensions: management safety practices, safety training and communication, workplace safety. The other dimension, safety behavior had also three dimensions: safety performance, safety responsibility and safety participation. The sample was made up 181 workers from marble factories. The results indicated that when management safety practices are strong, the safety participation and performance of workers rises. Another finding of this study is safety outcomes of two factories were similar. The results revealed significant associations between participation and safety performance of participants. Any relationship was found between demographic variables and safety behavior. Another important finding of this study is workers in marble factories have difficulties in reading and writing that may cause serious problems in applying safety rules. This study reinforces the empirical association of safety climate and safety behavior in workplaces and have an importance of being conducted first in marble sector and in Turkey comprehensively.
