According to intellectual Austrian Jean Améry, who lived in exile and was tortured in the concentration camps During World War II, suicide is a freely chosen type of death. Also, Améry emphasizes that the suicide is a virtue of humanity. In his suicide typology, Améry has questioned the social judgement against suicide, which is committed by the individuals who fail to deal with the problems, aims liberation and prefers the freedom. According to him, the suicide implies an innate desire of the individual. In this context, demolition and melancholia, which refer the individual to the suicide by depending on many factors such as sociological, psychological and economical, are intensely involved in the author's novels and essays. Instinctively, death thought has always taken place in the daily life of the author. Therefore, death and suicide thoughts indispensable themes in his works. The purpose of this study is to reveal the suicidal motives and their background in the novel “Die Schiffbrüchigen” by Améry. The novel, which was written in 1935, contains the historical and political events that took place in Austria between 1934 and 1935. The narrator depicts the guilty society in pre-Auschwitz, the choices of the individuals and acquisition and especially losses of Judaism with perspective of a victim. The author has experienced the events in the novel. This situation affects the method for this study.
