Le comportement des producteurs et la cohérence des politiques alimentaires et environnementales au Burundi
Changes in feeding habits of populations constitute an important aspect of food security but their prediction is very difficult. In this way, we carried out a socioeconomic analysis showing that, from the behavior of producers, we can predict changes in food demand and incorporate them into food and...

In this way, we carried out a socioeconomic analysis showing that, from the behavior of producers, we can predict changes in food demand and incorporate them into food and environmental policies. Our analysis focused on data collected in the Kabarore and Rutegama districts. Results show that farmers prefer to access food from their food production rights. Their choices are influenced by the scale of farms’ food production. When the scale of production increases, farmers tend to substitute cassava with other crops. Similar substitution effects may unexpectedly result from any agronomic or environmental measures aimed to increase crops productivity. To avoid perverse consequences, food and environmental policies makers should recognize the rationality of farmers’ behavior and comply with their choices. Therefore and above all, a twofold strategy must be the pillar of food and environmental policies : on the one hand, it needs to focus food supply to food self-sufficiency at national level, and on the other hand, at household level, all what is required to improve significantly access to food is just to promote access to agricultural inputs.Hassan NusuraGérard RusukuÉditions en environnement VertigOarticlerights to productionfood self-sufficiencyfood preferencesAfricamanagementintegrated managementEnvironmental sciencesGE1-350FRVertigO, Vol 17 (2013) |
