Description
Summary:Çarşamba is town which emerged as result of the start of the settlement during the Seljuks. As the coastal parts are swampy until the mid of the 20th century it is not appropriate for the human settlement. Despite the fact that some materials that belong to the ancient age have been obtained in the places such as Salıpazarı and Ayvacık in the south of the town, Tekkeköy in the west and Therme in the east, the same traces can not be found in Çarşamba. The names of the settled places in Çarşamba came out after the 13th century. The mosque in Gökçeli that goes back to 1206 is the oldest Turkish-Islamic architecture in Samsun. Firstly, the town was used as a temporary settlement during the period of the Seljuks and it became a permanent settlement in the later time period. Çarşamba that is one of the two bazaar-mosque in Arım in the Sanjak of Canik during the Ottoman State became a town from the beginning of the 20th century on.
