Sumario:In recent years, a number of researches have been conducted also considering students’ cognitive development. The concept of ‘zone of proximal development’, which was defined by Vygotsky, becomes important. The purpose of this study is to determine the ‘zone of proximal development’ of the 6th grade primary education students related to the ‘Tables and Graphics’ subject. Based on this purpose, the study was conducted with 6th grade primary education students at a public school located in the Kocaeli province of Turkey. While qualitative analysis methods were used in the study, data variation was provided by video (audio, video and interviews) and document analysis. According to the data obtained it is seen that students are able to overcome the difficulties they encounter. Furthermore, it is noticed that, among the students who participated in the study, while openness in the zone of proximal development of successful students was low, wideness in the zone of proximal development of students with low achievements is high. In accordance with the data, various recommendations have been made to the researchers to identify and determine the zone of proximal development.
