They have focused on individuals or groups on either side of the Atlantic, or, if they have narrated encounters, on the alleged inequalities and unevenness inherent in the relationship between scholars. Based on the collection of the Lima antiquary José Mariano Macedo (1823-1894), his manuscripts and correspondence with antiquities collectors, antiquaries and archaeologists in Europe and the United States, this paper occasions a revaluation.
