Sumario:Victims' registries are used in transitional justice processes, mainly to define the universe of beneficiaries of a reparations program for victims of massive human rights violations. This practical purpose, however, hides other possible contributions that these registries can make to the historical memory, as evidence of the magnitude and impact of violence in a given context. In order to transcend the purely administrative nature of this instrument, its design must meet a set of conditions that make it reliable. Thus, a first section explains what these conditions are, showing as example comparative information of existing official registries in fifteen countries. A second section, based on information from the Peruvian and Colombian victims' registries, specifies possible contributions of these registries to memory efforts made in contexts affected by periods of intense violence.
