This practical purpose, however, hides other possible contributions that these registries can make to the historical memory, as evidence of the magnitude and impact of violence in a given context. In order to transcend the purely administrative nature of this instrument, its design must meet a set of conditions that make it reliable. Thus, a first section explains what these conditions are, showing as example comparative information of existing official registries in fifteen countries.
