| Summary: | This paper deals with the issue of political parties in Algeria and endeavours to explain why multi-party politics instituted by the constitutional reforms of 1989 have not produced the promised electoral diversity. The main assumption is that the Algerian experience of democratisation was intended primarily as window dressing for a regime concerned by limiting opposition and reducing political parties to the role of tools and obviating their access to power via the ballot. The neo-paternalistic logic of the system led to a unique political typology whereby the purpose was not to ensure widespread participation in civil society but to project government onto the population. |
