Sumario:19th century poet Bayburtlu Zihni who is known for his works on Ottoman Divan poetry and folk poetry, also had a prose named Hikâye-i Garîbe. This narrative that was written in 1845, is not well known because its written text were discovered late. Since the narrative belongs to a period when the first modern literary works were composed, it exhibits innovations that are worth noting. This narrative, which does not overlap with the traditional genres such as Turkish folk story and mesnevi, in some respects, contains certain features of modern genres. These are obvious with regards to its topic and the characteristics of protagonist. The experiences of the protagonist, Abdullah Bey, resemble Picaro's the protagonist of the picaresque novel, which possesses a significant place in the European literature starting from the 16th century until the birth of the novel genre. In addition, characteristics of Abdullah Bey are similar to features of the tragic hero. In this article, the text of the narrative was analyzed from the perspectives of style and content, and its features that resemble and differ from traditional and modern genres were emphasized. It was concluded that the narrative could be accepted as a transitionary text, for it remains between traditional and modern genres.
