Sumario: | Anita Brookner chooses middle-aged, lonely, intelligent, sometimes interrogating, elegant but desperate women as heroes in her masterpiece Hotel du Lac, which she published in 1984 and won the Booker Prize. These women, who are not welcomed by the patriarchal society, are often the ones who seek happiness and love. Hotel du Lac's main heroine, Edith Hope, adapts to Brookner's traditional female character. Brookner’s narrator Edith is 39 and she comes to Hotel du Lac to finish her latest novel and at the same time to overcome her emotional problems. Giving the impression that she has a very interesting character, Edith turns into an ‘unhappy’ woman, who is in love with a married man. She is expected to go to Hotel du Lac to write a success story and get rid of her problems. Besides the establishment of capitalism and rise of the industrial revolution had a great impact on the lives of women and their position in the society. So, in this study, the place of woman in society will be discussed and the transformation of Edith, who has been working to reverse the male dominated society over time and regarding the realities of the society which Edith lives in, the criticism of the capitalist system, will be dealt with. |
