Sumario:the context of Maranháos "tambor de crioula" Abstraet: This article proposes to discuss popular culture as cultural heritage in the current context of public cultural policies and their application in the case of 'Tambor de Crioula" in Maranháo. In the past , manifestations of popular culture were persecuted and they are now understood to be the country's cultural heritage. The dance of "Tambor de Crioula" was hardly known and documented until recently. It is now the interest of researchers, photographers, filmmakers, appearing in books, in newspapers and magazines articles, OVOs, COs, as well as it is attended by numerous groups registered in the cíty of Sao Luís. A synthesis of knowledge of this manifestation of popular culture in the past and its current disclosure regarding the interests of tourisrn and culture and the support of cultural policies is presented in this paper.
