Sumario:The institutionalist approaches have been widely used in academic studies. Considering the importance of these approaches in the analysis of public policies, this study aims to explore the concepts and authors, proposing a reinterpretation in the context of public policies. The paper considers a fruitful approximation of the approaches of new institutionalism of rational choice and the New Institutional Economics (NIE). Still, common elements in the old institutional economics discussion with the sociological neo-institutionalism, and the historical neo-institutionalism. It is emphasized the potential of institutionalist approaches in the analysis of public policies, considering the complexity of the construction process of public policies and the influence of culture, values, interests, among others at various stages of the policy cycle.
