Sumario: | Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine the demographic characteristics of patients with intestinal obstruction, to determine the common mechanisms of obstruction in patients, to determine the frequency of cases for intestinal obstruction, and to determine their mortality and morbidity rates. Methods: In this study all the medical records of patients operated on in a two-year period were taken. The study was conducted in treatment and educational center of Pour-Sina in Rasht, in addition to admitting patients of this capital city, it is also a referral center for patients despatched from other cities of Guilan province. We measured incidence of infection, morbidity and mortality. Findings: Study results included the presentation of demographic features of patients and a pattern for causes of obstruction in clients. The highest morbidity was observed in patients in age group under 1 year and above 60 years. Sigmoid volvulus was the most prevalence cause of obstruction in the clients and volvulus of small intestine was the least common. Mortality rate in patients with volvulus was at its lowest level (3.9%) and it was the highest level (12.5%) in Hirschsprung’s disease. Conclusion: It is suggested analytic research be carried out about different etiologic factors of obstruction. |
