Sumario:The way in which the American administration in Iraq handled Iraqi “civil society” is emblematic of so-called “Reconstruction” – a highly ideological endeavor focused on the in-depth social and political transformation of Iraq. Whereas the original objective, the construction of the State, was quickly compromised, the will to resuscitate “civil society” as a “democratizing force” appears increasingly at odds with the reality of growing violence.
