Sumario:Divan-u Lugati’t-Turk, which is written by Kasgarli Mahmud, is an extremely important literary work fort the Turkish language and culture. With this literar work, Kasgarli Mahmud proved that Turkish is such a rich language that it is richer than Arabic in terms of structure. Divan-u Lugati’t-Turk, which was written almost a thousand years ago, is not only the first Turkish dictionary but also one of the first reference sources for many researchers about history and culture. In this article, the materials used in Divan-u Lugati’t-Turk are dwelt on. The most natural, valid, realistic and the easiest way for keeping the interest alive for language learners is to use the materials that would draw their attention. This work is scanning modeled and based on document analysis. For this purose, first, Divan-u Lugati’t-Turk has been scanned and then all the proverbs, couplets, poems, legends, verses of the Koran, hadiths, reduplications and colours which could be considered as an educational material of that era are marked; after that the acquired materials have been categorized according to their kinds and evaluated. Kasgarli Mahmud used proverbs to concrete abstract terms and strengthened his expressions. By having ryhme among the proverbs, he used the antiphrasis features as much as possible. In order to teach the meanings of the words in a better way and to teach some grammar rules, he used quatrains and couplets because they have got the sound harmony and rythm that keeps the readers’ attention alive and they are easy to remember. He narrated the language and the culture by illustrating the legends which are the big treasures of a culture. By doing that he both presented Turkish culture and beliefs to Arabs and drew attention and he also provied a better understanding to learn the words.
