Sumario:Applying the concept of « Histoire croisée », this text deals with the French exile of Brazilian and Chilean intellectuals during the respective military dictatorships in their countries. For a better apprehension of the complexity of interactive processes, we tried to emphasize the influence of French culture on these intellectuals, the Brazilians’ exile in Chile during Allende’s government, and then the relationships that both Brazilians and Chileans wove with their French counterparts in France. Whereas the highly political exile of the Chilean intellectuals was in most cases due to an expulsion, the exile of the Brazilians was generally voluntary, because of the less dramatic circumstances in which it took place. Research on these two distinct but complementary exiles explored the notions of commitment, transculturation and « the thinking on exile ». As a painful experience of loss, exile was, at the same time, a dominant factor for cultural enrichment.
