Sumario:This paper proposes to outline in four stages the history of the political image of Spanish in France in the 17th Century. It shows how we moved from a polyglot linguistic landscape in the sixteenth century to a first moment, at the beginning of the seventeenth century, where three languages inherited from Latin, Italian, Spanish and French, were put in competition. It then analyzes how the perception of Spanish oscillated between positive and negative moments, thanks to the political vagaries. Finally, it examines how the motif of imperium, of power, crept into linguistic discussions, making the relationship to Spanish in France at that time a textbook case of the study of language-power relationships.
