Both quantitative and qualitative data collection tools were used in the study. The quantitative data were gathered using the scale for inquiry skills developed by Karademir and Saracaloğlu (2013). The latter data were collected by an interview form developed by the authors. The interview form was developed based on the review of the related studies. In the quantitative part of the study the level of inquiry skills and the relationship between it and the gender of the particpants were examined. In the qualitative part the views of the participants about inquiry were analysed in detail. The participants of the study were a total of 79 pre-service teachers attending different departments of the Educational Sciences Faculty at Hakkari University. The participants of the interviews were volunteer thirteen pre-service teachers. The quantitative data collected were analysed using descriptive statistical techniques. In order to see whether or not gender played a significant role in their answers to the items in the scale t-test was employed. As stated earlier qualitative data were collected through interviews which were carried out in a focus group context. The interview lasted for nearly thirteen-four minutes. The data obtained were analysed using content analysis. The data were recorded with the permission of the participants. The qualitative data obtained from the interviews were analysed based on the dimensions of the scale, namely “acquisition of knowledge”, “controlling knowledge” and “self-confidence” using the content analysis. The findings of the study showed that the participants had the inquiry skills at level of “frequently”. Their views also supported this finding.Zeynep NALAN YILMAZÖzge AYDIN ŞENGÜLFırat Universityarticlepreservice teachers, inquiry skillsSocial SciencesHSocial sciences (General)H1-99DEENFRTRJournal of Academic Social Science Studies , Vol 9, Iss 42, Pp 535-546 (2019)
