| Sumario: | The life span of the poet Muhammad Mahdi al-Jawâhirî coincided with the twentieth century, and mirrored the formative events of modern Iraqi state and society, especially in the first half of the century. He was part of the incipient state-class and the public sphere it dominated. He was a prominent actor in the fields of journalism and literature, active participant in the political currents and intrigues which characterised the country. Episodes in his life illustrate both the imaginaire of the new Iraqi nation and its fissiparous and sectarian tendencies. It also illustrates the turns of public life and literature from the patronage of the powerful and the rich to orientation to the “public”. The conception of that public was shaped by the rising political movements, crucially those of the Communists and the left, to which Jawâhirî became firmly attached. |
