He was a prominent actor in the fields of journalism and literature, active participant in the political currents and intrigues which characterised the country. Episodes in his life illustrate both the imaginaire of the new Iraqi nation and its fissiparous and sectarian tendencies. It also illustrates the turns of public life and literature from the patronage of the powerful and the rich to orientation to the “public”.
