Sumario: | In this article I follow the career of two medium mining entrepreneurs from the second half of the 18th century. My aim is to focus on the main structural problems they had to face, as well as the economic and financial strategies they developed in order to maintain themselves as medium-scale metal producers. My intention is to show how they acquired mining properties, the method by which they carried out such a systematic enterprise and managed to enter other spheres of the economy, besides obtaining finance and entry into the political arena. The result has been the characterization of medium-scale miners as entrepreneurs endowed with an unprecedented dynamism that allowed them not only to acquire stock in different mining operations and haciendas dedicated to metal production, but also to invest in needed technical innovations and infrastructure. Furthermore, they are presented as entrepreneurs and officials with political posts in the local government and that of the New Spain. This introduces new parameters to visualize the role of thousands of the small and medium miners in the history of mining, including those who, despite not having had such an influential role, were owners of mining operations whose production, taken together, was of great importance, and whose study will allow us to understand the nature of small and medium-scale mining in Latin America as a whole. |
