Descripción
Sumario:This work deals with the representation of don Juan Manuel (1282-1348), a great dissident noble of his time, in the three chronicles of the reign of Alfonso XI of Castile (1312-1350) : the Crónica de Alfonso XI (1344), the Poema de Alfonso Onceno (1348) and the Gran Crónica de Alfonso XI (1376). After showing how the Crónica denies the legitimacy of don Juan’s rebellion and particularly founds the criticism against him on his alliance, alternately passive and active, with Granada — against which Castile’s crown wages a perpetual war—, this study proves that the blame on this character is, however, limited by the absolute obligation, for the chronicle, to conceal a few contradictions in the political action of the king. Next, it shows how the Gran Crónica, a new version of the first text, written under the reign of Henri II, in order to clear don Juan Manuel’s name, emphasizes his participation in the war against the Muslims, by inserting and developing some episods taken from the Poema.
