Sumario:This study focuses on parishes and clergy of the Buenos Aires campaign during times of ecclesiastical strengthening and redefintion of Rio de la Plata’s clergy profile. The phase of new political definitions in second half of the century was part of the process of “Romanization” driven by Pio IX, ratified by local hierarchies and clergy, besides reinforced by Vatican Council I. In Rio de la Plata’s church, there were debates about “the enlightenment” of priests and the need of a national clergy. Complains regarding the clergy’s scarce numbers and its lack of formation were part of speeches and letters exchanged between ecclesiastical hierarchs. Nevertheless, this clergy – composed only by foreingers – was continuously growing. Analysis of curacies established south of the Rio Salado reveal they were never vacant. The large tracts of campaign parishes conceived a clergy with a marked itinerant, missionary-sacramental profile.
