Sumario:This dossier presents articles focusing on two dimensions of Latin American societies in a wide spectrum of historic, social and national variations: on one hand, the importance of cities in social imaginaries and their multiple ways of being represented in discourse; on the other hand, the impact of urban processes on the constitution of complex identities, circumscribed to or in clear disagreement with certain parameters traditionally associated to the feminine gender. The articles examine a long period of time beginning from the late nineteenth century, when cities became the center of Modernity, until reaching the beginnings of the twenty-first century, when the big capitals have become fragmented cities in which some global standards coexist with vast areas of poverty.
