Sumario:The selection process of candidates in regional parties in Argentina is the manifestation of the nature of these groups, mainly from the party leader’s strong control over all the aspects of these district parties. The large majority of these forces are characterised by the presence of a tough personal leadership or a familiar oligarchy, which owns full power within the party, according to customer relations with the electorate and the party’s members. The legitimacy granted to the party leader by this type of relations, allows him to have full power to appoint candidates, punishing or rewarding them for their political behaviour. This issue limits party members’ action, who define their political activity according to the aims and principles set by the regional leader.
