In the Hispanic spheres, festivals were conceived as moments of collective joy with a profound respect of the social, urban and political orders. This model differed deeply from the widespread idea that indigenous festivities were mere expressions of collective drunkenness contrary to any social or moral order, and thus should be either eradicated or domesticated.
