Sumario:Absolute value is a concept that forms the basis of the further mathematics knowledge. In the meantime, the number of the research about the concept of absolute value is quite limited. In this research, it was aimed to examine the perceptions and determine the metaphors of middle school students about the absolute value. Besides, it was examined the changing of these mental images about absolute value according to grades of the students. With this aim, this research was carried out with a total of 471 middle school seventh and eighth grade students who were studying at a middle school from Istanbul in the spring semester of 2017-2018 academic year. Research data was obtained as a result of the completion of the sentence which is "Absolute value is like......, because.......". In the analysis of the obtained data, descriptive analysis method was used. At this stage, these mental images were determined as grade levels and categorized. In conclusion, the valid and different mental images of middle school students about absolute value were reported in this research. Within this context, these mental images about the absolute value of the students were classified and evaluated in different seven categories. Additionally, it was indicated that these students' mental images were differentiated according to grades in this research.
