Electrochromic behavior of mono and dibenzyl substituted viologens in deep eutectic solvents

Sumario:The electrochromic properties of monobenzyl-viologen (MBV) and dibenzyl-viologen (DBV) in chloride-ethylene glycol deep eutectic solvents (DES) are studied by cyclic voltammetry and in situ UV-vis spectroscopy. The results show that redox reactions of both viologens between bleached and colored state are reversible. The DBV showed a blue colored state and the MBV showed a magenta colored state, respectively. According to the CIE colorimetric data, with a solution containing the mixture of DBV and MBV in a molar ratio of 1:2, multi-colored states from colorless→blue→red-violet under various voltages were observed.
