| Sumario: | These objects from Ivory Coast are common to many cultures. They are made around the lake Kossou by Baule, Guro and Yaure people. Despite some physical differences, the boxes have the same characteristics: dual-stage communication through a hole, two lids, light and modest dimensions. These elements are matched by a live mouse as a medium, and used for travelling consultations. The divinatory sessions are ritualized. Nowadays this kind of divination is profane; however, it derives from the cult of Gbekre, a judge deity who was the banner of the fight against colonialisation. Decorated boxes are only made by the Baule people. This variety of decors reflects a liberal art market, while the Guro and Yaure sculptors are foremost blacksmiths. |
