Summary:The study attempts to defi ne Dumitru Matcovschi’s poetics which, enerally, oscillates between the Orphic and Messianic temptations. As the lyric poems somehow helped the poet to impose himself as far back as in the 60s, his Messianic poems made him a „convicted” poet. In Matcovschi’s opinion, the man of arts is to be fi rstly a good citizen. In his best poems he polemizes with heads of totalitarian form of government, in an ostentatious way he shows off his Romanianism, he has an unhidden respect for classical culture, he writes simply and stylizes using folk elements the happiness of existing; he brings in the fore-ground, praises other values but not those imposed. In this confession there is an immense drama of „a man under the times”.
