Istanbul, which was the capital city of Byzantines for thousand years and has also been considered as a capital of civilization, was the capital of a world civilization “Ottoman Empire” from 1453 to 1920. After the proclamation of the republic of Turkey, it has kept its existence as a center of hybrid of cultures and civilizations. Istanbul was also the centre of music in Ottoman Empire. A lot of musicians were raised in the court, which is the centre the Ottoman Empire and the other musicians were supported by it. Therefore this triangle, Ottoman- Istanbul and the Court, was representing the basics in music. The music assemblages in Ottoman Empire for the sultan exemplified entertainments in halls and chalets between public. Therefore the court was like a mirror of interactions and exchanges of the music life of the Ottomans and Istanbul. Especially, Enderun, which was the school of the court and which taught geography, astronomy, illumination, art and music, contributed to bringing up of many musicians. It turned out to be an association many people wanted to enter. In terms of the growth and development of the identity of the Ottoman Turkish Music, it is important that Ottoman Empire was ruled by monarchy, because it is inevitable that music gains the top position in a society where the music was supported by the court and many of the sultans who were already composers. In this paper, the life of the Turkish Music will be examined and the place and importance of Istanbul and the court in Turkish Music will be researched in the context of the triangle of Ottoman- Istanbul and the Court.Gözde ÇOLAKOĞLU SARIFırat Universityarticleidentity of ottoman turkish musicistanbulthe courtSocial SciencesHSocial sciences (General)H1-99DEENFRTRJournal of Academic Social Science Studies , Vol 12, Iss 78, Pp 251-260 (2019) |
