For this reason, experts use scientific indicators to detect the presence of these problems. The research presented aimed at identifying indicators that elementary students use to find an environmental problem in a coastal area. Students in 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 6th and 8th grades were interviewed on various aspects of the environment : the health of plants, wildlife, streams, coastal zone and coastal species. The data collection tools were questionnaires and interviews. The results indicate that the main health indicators used by pupils are the color of plants (2nd and 8th grades), movement and size of animal (3rd and 8th grades), and lack of pollution (waste) in streams and in the coastal zone (4th and 8th grades). Students mainly use indicators visible with their senses, which results in a limited awareness of local issues. Educational recommendations are provided for improving students’ environmental perceptions.Houcine BenchekrounDiane PruneauÉditions en environnement VertigOarticleperceptionenvironmental problemsenvironmental indicatorsenvironmental educationecosystemic servicesenvironmentEnvironmental sciencesGE1-350FRVertigO, Vol 11, Iss 1 (2011) |
