Sumario:This paper aims to analyze why public servants of the Military Police of Paraná, in Brazil, do notremain in the career, considering the public service motivation and motivational factors and existingchallenges on the job. Public Service Motivation has been a theme recently debated in managementdue to the importance for the quality of the functioning of public organizations. In the case of publicsafety, difficulties in the retention of employees can compromise the life quality of citizens and increasecrime rates. The research approach is qualitative and the methodological strategy is case study, thatwas conducted survey and in-depth interviews. More than a calling, a mission, the results suggestthat job stability is one of the main motivators for entry into career, but the salary issue, difficultiesin reconciling work and family, and career plans do not promote the retention of these talents , lea-ding them to request proportional retirement with 25 years of service. As a suggestion to improvethe motivation of police officers, we suggest the creation of policies to encourage retention, salaryreview, achievement of organizational climate survey and actions to improving the working conditions.
