Active suppression prevents the return of threat memory in humans

Ye Wang et al. show that conscious thought active suppression eliminates learned fear responses whereas thought diversion only reduces cue-specific fear response. This study suggests that declarative control mechanisms may be utilized to treat persistent maladaptive memories.
