Sumario:The issue of the place of religion in the American public sphere deals with the relation between federalism and secularism over the course of American history to present day debates. This leads to answer the question whether the attachment to Federalism proceeds from an initial organic link between localism and religion, or whether the religious angle has been used from the onset by the backers of States' rights to legitimate States' powers vis a vis Federal power
