Summary:During the period 1764-1821, 196 men served as intendants in the viceroyalty of New Spain. Among these men, one hundred were appointed provisionaly. This important presence of temporary intendants isn’t a specific fact in the intendancy because we find this phenomenon in others bodies of the administration. However very few works are dedicaded to them while this temporary intendants some times stayed in charge longer than the full intendants. Guarantors of the continuity of the institutions of monarchy, the temporary intendants deserve that we grant them more attention. This is the purpose of this article. By adopting a prosopografical approach, we will first try who are these men and to describe the family and social environment in which they join before studying some career path.
