In situ X-ray scattering observation of two-dimensional interfacial colloidal crystallization

Colloids adsorbed at fluid interfaces can self-assemble into crystal, but the detail remains largely unknown due to experimental challenges. Using in situ X-ray scattering, Wu et al. show that out-of-plane electrostatic force induces in-plane capillary attraction between like-charged particles.
