John Dewey and the following educators have claimed that the best learning method is based on experience. It is known that especially preschool children, school-age children and also youngsters are more interested in outside life spaces. Werner (1985) stated that children learn and find out about nature in parks, schoolyards or playgrounds located in city centres. Neumann (1982) argued that the theoretical information and knowledge provided in schools is not adequate by itself and schoolyards should be used as practice spaces and grounds. He suggested that the children growing up in big cities have difficulty in recognising plants and animals, thus plants and animals can be introduced in schoolyards and these spaces could be organised as environment laboratories. Besides, he argued that an effective environmental protection policy can be implemented by raising the awareness of students about the advantages of plants and animals. For all these reasons stated above, a dedicated space for a schoolyard or a playground that could meet the needs of students is considered as obligatory. Accordingly, it would be possible to design qualified schoolyards and playgrounds that can meet the needs with appropriate planning activities. In this study, the current situation of five independent preschool institutions based in Altınordu sub-province of Ordu have been analysed and the sufficiency of these preschools in regards to the principles and standards of playgrounds in preschool education has been identified. The research is a descriptive research, with a general survey model. “Information Collection Form” has been used as the data collection tool, developed by the researcher as an outcome of the relevant literature research. The information related to the building sites and playgrounds of the schools involved in the research has been collected via interviews held with the school principals and through site visits to the schools. The obtained data has been compared to the standards identified for the preschool institutions and the adequacy of schools have been outlined. The outcomes have been discussed in relation to the principles of preschool education and the requirements of preschool education institutions and suggestions have been provided for the solution of current issues and problems.Nalan ARABACIFırat Universityarticleearly childhoodpreschool educationschoolyardsplaygroundsturkeySocial SciencesHSocial sciences (General)H1-99DEENFRTRJournal of Academic Social Science Studies , Vol 13, Iss 83, Pp 71-88 (2021) |
