She is an important name of the New Novel movement that appeared in France, beginning from the middle of 20th century to the 80s. The main elements of the novel; persona, time and space have been evaluated considering their roles throughout the plot. The novel’s significance and function within this movement can be determined easily when it is read comparing firstly with its own fiction and principles, and secondly with other authors’ novels in this period. The 20th century ‘New Novel’ is considered as a rebellion against traditional classical novel which is carried to its highest level by Honoré de Balzac with his The Human Comedy in the 19th century. Certainly, the political, social and economic differences between two centuries are the main reasons for this rebellion. The new type of novel is supposed to possess a style, form and context which would represent a new generation instead of the traditional classical one, since the 20th century people do not have the same life standards as the people from previous century. In the new century, the rising bourgeois values reveal the feature of alienation that separates humans completely from their nature by turning towards materialism. Henceforth, it is impossible for the decayed human life to have a unity of time and space. Capitalist bourgeois traditions, which attempt to control everything, consider commodities and material values to be superior to human essence, and humans become the slaves of these new traditions. Thus, in this context, the ‘New Novel’ displays the tragic condition of the human being with its most striking aspects and becomes the spokesman of a new generation by attracting society’s attention.Hanife Nalan GENÇAli TİLBEFırat Universityarticlenew novelthe little horses of tarquiniamarguerite durasnarrative coordinationalienationcapSocial SciencesHSocial sciences (General)H1-99DEENFRTRJournal of Academic Social Science Studies , Vol 6, Iss 16, Pp 707-723 (2019)
