RESUMO: Neste artigo, discute-se as ideias de atraso e de reforma como elementos-chave para se compreender o papel da educação no processo reformista em Portugal, na segunda metade do século XVIII. Analisando algumas ideias de D. Luiz da Cunha, Antonio Nunes Ribeiro Sanches e Luiz Antonio Verney, argumenta-se que a ideia de atraso foi fundamental para legitimar e justificar a necessidade de reformas do período pombalino. Assim, pretende-se contribuir para uma melhor compreensão do contexto das ideias no governo de D. João V e seus efeitos no governo de D. José I, no âmbito do debate historiográfico sobre o Iluminismo em Portugal.

ABSTRACT: This article discusses the ideas of delay and reform as key elements to understand the role of education in the portuguese reformist process during the second half of the XVIII Century. Analyzing some ideas of D. Luiz da Cunha, Antonio Nunes Ribeiro Sanches and Luiz Antonio Verney, the argument is that the delay was fundamental to legitimize and justify the need of reforms in the pombalino period. Therefore, it intends to contribute for a better comprehension of the ideas in the D. João V government context, its effects in the government of D. José I and for the historiographic debate on the Enlightenment in Portugal.
