The fact that the history of the Republic was the first military coup, and that the coup did not take place in a hierarchical manner and in the chain of command, is one of the distinguishing features of this coup. Another remarkable and different feature of this coup is manner of academicians towards coup who worked at universities in that period. When it comes to Turkey’s recent history, May 27, 1960 coup comes to the forefront as a most debated and commented issue. It is possible to talk about many of the studies on coup. However, in any of these studies, there is no research that reveals the manners of academics towards the coup in the aftermath of the coup, justifying the reasons they express directly. When the coup was made on May 27, 1960, there were totally 7 universities in Turkey. Almost all of the academics, who worked at these universities and gave an opinion related coup, took positive manner towards the coup. In this research, firstly, the relation between government and universities will be mentioned during the period of 1950-1960 when the DP was in power, and then on the reasons for which a significant part of academics supported the military coup in the post-coup period. In this research, firstly, the relation between government and universities will be mentioned during the period of 1950-1960 when the DP was in power, and then on what grounds a significant part of academics supported the coup in the post-coup period will try to reveal.
