Sumario:This paper discusses the need for a tsunami evacuation building (TEB) as a new risk management approach to Cascadia earthquakes and tsunamis. Taking its starting point from FEMA P646 (2008) guidelines for design of structures for evacuation from tsunamis, it looks at how this approach would work for rebuilding the Cannon Beach City Hall as a TEB. Geotechnical, structural and hydraulic designs and technical issues are considered in the project. The paper gives the outline for a future feasibility study that would include subsurface exploration, tsunami evacuation modeling, development of the conceptual design to allow for preliminary structure design, development of tsunami wave dissipation strategies, and assessment of costs. The goal of the future study is to test the feasibility of a TEB in a real situation which will allow communities to understand the technical and cost implications.
